2017 Whitney Stakes Predictions, Contenders, Live Longshot

2017 Whitney Stakes PredictionsWelcome to the thralls of summer horse racing and Saratoga Race Course, otherwise known as The Spa. The Spa has a few premier races this summer and one of them is upon us in the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes. Below is a simple breakdown of each horse that is slated to enter the starting gate this Saturday. What you will see is not a complete stat sheet for each horse since you can get that from Daily Racing Form or Equibase. Instead they are my 2017 Whitney Stakes predictions summed up to help each of you make a decision when you walk to the window, the machine or click a mouse to make a wager on the 2017 Whitney Stakes.

The Backstory – Over the years I have continued to modify how I break down each race based on input from the readers (Thank for your reading and leaving feedback over the years). That could be from any number of sites I have created content for including Sports Unbiased. However, when I started Longshot Horse Racing, I wanted to apply all I heard and get away from very granular and in-depth analysis of each horse in the field. Many claimed the reading was dry and over the top. Now you will find data about each horse, how it should shake out, and we will have a little fun doing it. If you want just the raw numbers then Brisnet, Equibase, or even the Daily Racing Form are right up your alley (and mine since I love them all) but if you want the breakdown with a twist then read on and enjoy.

2017 Whitney Stakes Predictions – Contenders Analysis

red saddle cloth post 1WAR STORY – The connections have kept this five-year-old always battling against some of the top horses in North America. He enters off a win in the Grade 2 Brooklyn down at Belmont. He can take different approaches but like to come from off the pace. Stablemate Cautious Giant is here to put some tire into Gun Runner increasing the chances of War Story. Rain is in the forecast and he is 2-0-1 in three trips over off tracks. Castellano stays on the mount after last score and he knows The Spa. Interesting at a price.

white saddle cloth post 2BREAKING LUCKY – His races are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get. But at his best he can be in play. Luis Contreras comes down from Canada to stay on him. This jockey has won a stakes race at The Spa before. Breaking Lucky has past history here finishing in a four horse photo for the Grade 1 Woodward. Can he win? At his best. More than likely to add price value to the exotics but not out of the question if Gun Runner hates the off track. More on that later.

blue saddle cloth post 3CAUTIOUS GIANT – He is the rabbit brought here to set the stage for War Story. There is no scenario I can think of that ends with him in the exotics much less on top.

yellow saddle cloth post 4TU BRUTUS – The import has had some success and ran some big races here in North America since coming in from Chili. But in a first true step up he did not fare well against War Story in the Brooklyn. Appears to be a front running type with a gear that is a step below the top horses.

green saddle cloth post 5KEEN ICE – Everyone knows his name due to the knockout of American Pharoah in the Travers Stakes a couple of summers ago. So he has won at The Spa in the past and against top talent. But outside of that win the next solid score was last out in the Suburban when he knocked of Shaman Ghost. Overall there are only three wins in 22 starts. Hard to back a horse at 4-1 M/L with three career wins even if one was over a Triple Crown winner.

black saddle cloth post 6GUN RUNNER – Here lies the second base horse in the Handicap Division behind Arrogate. Connections are even more motivated since Arrogate laid an egg in the San Diego giving Gun Runner a reasonable shot at Horse of the Year. He IS the class of this field but if you are looking for knocks in the armor you can look at two. First, he finished third in his only other race at The Spa (but the winner was Arrogate). Also, while is normally as consistent and solid as it gets, he finished worse than third twice but on off-tracks. There is a forecast that can bring an off track this weekend. But it could be that his less than best is still enough to top this field.

orange saddle cloth post 7DESCREET LOVER – Frankly not looked good and again less in last four stakes tries. There was an allowance score at Parx but there is literally zero comparison between that field and the one he gets this Saturday. This will be by far the hardest field he has encountered and he may find a way to finish out of last but that should be the expectation. But hey, Mine that Bird won the Derby:)

2017 Whitney Stakes Predictions – Live Longshot

HANDICAPPING NOTE – Over the last decade, only two horses in the roll of betting favorite have won the Whitney. However, two horses outside of 10-1 have scored as well. Hence the name “Graveyard of Champions.”
